  Dick Northam (the "north" in Northbilt) was a Driver, Builder, Team Manager, Chief Mechanic, and Speed shop proprietor in the IndyCar series, the United States Auto Club, CORA midget series, UMRA and several others for 40 plus years. His influence is still felt today across the board. Known for his outgoing and friendly nature he was also revered for his aggressive nature behind the wheel.

  Northbilt is now owned by our founder's grandson, Bret Johnson. Much like his grandfather he is a veteran of the IndyCar series, USAC midget series, UMRA and more as a Driver and Mechanic. He has also spent considerable time in the consumer automotive industry holding several certifications from Toyota and the Ford Motor Company. His fabrication, design and mechanical skills are directly handed down from his grandfather and his father, Erik Johnson. Bret built his first motorcycle engine at 11 years old under the direction of his grandfather and father, then continued building them on his own at the same young age. These skills and craftsmanship are direct descendants from a bygone era that you struggle to find anymore.
